Brigadoon

“The mornin' dew is blinkin' yonder. There's lazy music in the rill,

And all I want to do is wander through the heather on the hill.”

The famous Lerner and Loewe whimsical musical fantasy is about two American tourists, Tommy and Jeff, who wander upon a mysterious Scottish village that materializes from the Highland mists once every hundred years, only to disappear the next day. To the villagers, the passing of each century seems no longer than one night. They feel that the enchantment is more of a blessing than a curse, as it saved the village from destruction. According to their covenant, no one from Brigadoon may ever leave, or the enchantment will be broken and the site and all its inhabitants will disappear into the mist forever.

Tommy inevitably falls in love with one of the villagers, Fiona, presenting the main conflict of the musical. The problem is that if Tommy stays in the town for more than a day, he can never return home to New York. Not trusting him emotions, Tommy returns home to his fiancée , Jane Ashton, whom he really does not want to marry. In the end, at the last minute, Tommy cancels his wedding and returns to Scotland. In another miracle, because Tommy's love for Fiona is so great, Brigadoon returns for another brief moment to allow Tommy to enter and never return to the outside world.

Allegedly, the name Brigadoon was inspired by a late medieval bridge called Brig o’ Doon, located near Alloway in South Ayreshire, crossing the River Doon. The famous bridge is also the settings for the final verse of Robert Burn’s poem Tamo’Shanter.

1. The Oceanarium: Lisbon's Oceanarium is one of the world's largest aquariums. It is a deep-sea diving experience without any of the risks, with about 25,000 fish, seabirds, and mammals in an enormous central tank that is the size of four Olympic-sized swimming pools. Visitors can look into it from different levels for close-ups of the various creatures, including different species of sharks.

2. Tropical Garden: Lisbon's beautiful tropical garden is a charming, yet often overlooked spot that has maintained all the ponds, towering palm trees, and over 4000 species of tropical plants that it had when it was created in 1906.

3. Coaches Museum: One of Lisbon's most visited sights, the Coaches Museum has the largest and most valuable collection of fairytale coaches in the world.

4. Interactive Science Museum: The Interactive Science Museum has highly educational exhibits with cutting-edge technology and multimedia. Shopping in Lisbon

Baixa, the city center of Lisbon, Portugal, with elegant squares, pedestrianized streets, cafes, and shops. Old tramcars, street performers, tiled Art Deco shopfronts, elaborately decorated pastry shops, and street vendors selling everything from flowers to souvenirs, all lend a special charm to the area. Watch it all from a table outside Nicola Café in Rossio Square facing the monumental National Theater and Saint George's Castle, and as you stroll down the pedestrian Rua Augusta, past the triumphal arch, into the majestic Comercio Square. Look down at the cobbled mosaic pavements as you walk down Avenida da Liberdade, past Restauradores, Rossio, and Rua Augusta. It is hardly a secret but the nondescript façade of "Casa do Alentejo" in Rua das Portas de Santo Antão may prevent you from finding its beautiful Moorish interior.

Baixa literally means “low” as it is situated in the gulf between the two main hills of the city. Owing its neat rows of stately neoclassical buildings to the devastating earthquake of 1755, it is said that it is almost impossible to get lost in downtown Lisbon.

Baixa is the central shopping and business district of Lisbon. Portuguese handcrafts often exhibit exotic influences, in part because of Portugal’s vast history as a seafaring nation. The Baixa shopping district lies between the Rossio and the river Tagus. The three main shopping streets are the Rua Aurea, or Street of Gold, the Rua da Prata, Street of Silver and the Rua Augusta.

Don’t forget to check out the famous Feira da Ladra, or “Theives Market” where you can experience haggling for bargains. Today, the traders here are perfectly legal, and they show their wares every Tuesday and Saturday. This open-air market is about a 5 minute walk from the waterfront, close to the Alfama district. Start browsing at Campo de Santa Clara, portable stalls and individual displays climb the hilly street. Nearly everything you can imagine is for sale here, but come early for the finest pickings.

The Traditional Aran Sweater

What trip to Ireland would be complete without browsing through an Irish Woollen Mills? At an Irish Woollen Mills, you find plenty of woolen products, a variety of knit styles and sometimes a load of over Irish products. With Celtic Tours, most of our Irish tours offer an optional shopping trip to an Irish Woollen Mills.

One of the most famous woolen products is the Aran sweater, which hails from the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. Sometimes known as a fisherman sweater, the Aran sweater is bulky with prominent cable patterns. The sweaters are distinguishable by their complex textured stitch patterns, several of which are combined in the creation of a single sweater. Some stitch patterns have a traditional interpretation, often of religious significance. The honeycomb is a symbol of a hard-working bee, while the cable is said to bring safety and good luck when fishing. The diamond is a wish of success, wealth and treasure while the basket stitch represents the fisherman’s basket, a hope for a plentiful catch.The zig zag stitch represents the ups and downs of marriage as well as the twisting cliff paths that are on the islands.

Traditionally, the sweaters were hand-knitted with un-dyed, un-scoured cream-colored wool. The wools retained their natural oils which made the sweaters water-resistant, waking them wearable even when wet making them ideal for a fisherman. Up until the 1970’s, the Aran island women spun their own yarn on spinning wheels and hand-knitted the sweaters.

Today, the majority of items for sale in Ireland and elsewhere are either machine knit or produced on a hand loom. There are very few hand-knit sweaters for sale on a commercial basis. Machine-knit sweaters tend to use finer wools and have less complex patterns, since many of the traditional stitches cannot be reproduced this way. Hand-looming allows for more complicated stitches, will have fewer stitches to the inch and be somewhat thicker. It is often hard to tell the best quality hand-loomed sweater from the hand knit. Hand-knit sweaters tend to be a tighter knit, more complex stitch patterns and also much more expensive. You can tell the difference between the machine knit and the hand knit by holding it up to the light.

San Gimignano

San Gimignano: a small, walled hill town with 14 towers rising from the Elsa Valley, in the province of Siena, Tuscany. Known for its famous medieval architecture, long-standing towers and some of the best wine in Italy, San Gimignano is well worth a visit!

The town was founded in the 3^rd Century by Etruscans. As a stop along the Catholic Pilgrimage route, the town grew in importance and wealth up until the mid-1300’s when the population was seriously decreased by the Black Death Plague.

In the following centuries San Gimignano overcame its decline and isolation when its beauty and cultural importance together with its agricultural heritage were rediscovered. Known primarily for its towers that date back to the 11th and 13th centuries, the architecture of the city was influenced by Pisa, Siena and Florence.

The town also is known for the white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, grown in the area. Since the Renaissance it has been considered one of Italy's finest white wines.

The Tower of London

Visit the Tower of London, the ancient stones reverberate with dark secrets, priceless jewels glint in fortified vaults and ravens strut the grounds. Despite a grim reputation as a place of torture and death, this powerful and enduring fortress has been enjoyed as a royal palace, served as an armory and for a number of years even housed a zoo!

In the early 1080s, William the Conqueror began to build a massive stone tower at the centre of his London fortress. Nothing like it had ever been seen before. Immense, the Tower of London dominated the skyline for miles around. The Tower was protected by Roman walls on two sides, ditches to the north and west up to 25 ft wide and 11 ft deep and an earthwork topped by a wooden palisade. Although many later kings and queens stayed at the Tower, it was never intended as the main royal residence nor was it meant as the first line of defense against invading armies. The Tower’s primary function was as a fortress-stronghold, a role that remained unchanged right up until the late 19th century.

The Tower of London holds some of the most remarkable stories from across the centuries. Gaze up at the massive White Tower, tiptoe through a kings' medieval bedchamber and marvel at the priceless Crown Jewels. The famous Yeoman Warders have bloody tales to tell; stand where heads rolled and prisoners wept. The Tower held many famous prisoners, from the highest levels of society; some in astonishing comfort and others less so… Visit the places of their confinement and read the graffiti left by prisoners from over 500 years ago.
