The Story of Knock

Visit Knock a major pilgrimage and prayer site in Ireland, attracting over 1.5 million pilgrims each year.

The Story of Knock began on a rainy evening over a hundred years ago, when 15 people witnessed the apparition of Our Lady, Saint Joseph, and Saint John the Evangelist at the south gable end of the local small parish church. They stood in the pouring rain for over two hours, overwhelmed by the miraculous apparition, reciting the Rosary, a traditional Catholic prayer. From this miraculous apparition, Knock has grown to the status of an internationally recognized Marian Shrine.

The personal pilgrimage of Pope John Paul II in 1979 inspired an even greater devotion to the Shrine and endorsed the indelible seal of Vatican approval. Knock Shrine was also visited by Mother Teresa of Calcutta in 1993. Every year, the Knock Shrine is visited by 1.5 million pilgrims."
